The United States earth retaining structure market exceeds 200 million square feet annually.  Selecting the most technically appropriate and cost-effective system is often critical to project cost and schedule. Selection of an inappropriate system unfortunately can result in time consuming and costly construction disputes. Many engineers, contractors and project managers do not have the needed knowledge and skills to select, design and construct these systems.

This course will teach you the critical knowledge and skills you need in order to take advantage of the cost effective use of earth retaining structures in urban construction for transportation, commercial and industrial development.

During this 2 ½ day program the instructor presents a logical sequence of topics and activities to allow participants to demonstrate their knowledge and skills. These activities include: lecture, student exercises, instructor lead example problems and lively discussion periods. All participants will receive a copy of the Federal Highway Administration (June 2008) publication on the selection, design and construction of Earth Retaining Structures. This publication is the third edition of the subject document and includes sections on surface and subsurface drainage, selection of soil and rock properties and detailed design examples.

  • Externally Stabilized Walls (e.g., Sheet Pile, Soldier Pile and Lagging, Slurry Walls) Intro
  • Externally Stabilized Wall Design

  • Risk based systems for inspection and monitoring of completed retaining wall inventories

This course will enable YOU to:

  • Recognize potential applications for retention structures used in civil engineering applications
  • Select the most technically appropriate and cost-effective earth retaining system for your application. Examine and select appropriate material properties, soil/rock design parameters and earth pressure diagrams
  • Prepare conceptual and basic designs using appropriate design methods, factors of safety, earth pressure diagrams and field verification methods
  • Understand and apply load and resistance factor design principles to the design of temporary and permanent earth retaining structures
  • Evaluate and review contractor submitted designs
  • Select appropriate specification/contracting method(s) and prepare contract documents
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of retaining wall construction and maintenance

Program Fee includes extensive course notes; continental breakfasts, and all breaks. Lunches are not provided; however, Newark offers convenient options.

Mr. Jerry DiMaggio, P.E., D.GE, F.ASCE, ARA

Mr. Jerry DiMaggio has more than 40 years of experience in civil and transportation engineering, and construction. He is internationally recognized for his contributions in design, construction, forensic assessment, resolution of disputes and innovation deployment.  As a principal engineer at Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA), Mr. DiMaggio serves as project manager and technical expert on a diverse suite of projects.  He holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Civil Engineering, is a Master Trainer and a contract arbitrator.  He is experienced at meeting and workshop facilitation for business and technical activities. He has provided consulting services on approximately 1000 civil construction and business related projects in all 50 states, throughout the Americas, several Middle Eastern countries and Australia.  Jerry has presented hundreds of seminars and workshops. While at FHWA Mr. DiMaggio managed and co-developed 20 National Highway Institute courses and managed the structures continuing education program. Mr. DiMaggio’s technical areas of specialty include structural foundations, earth retaining structures, ground improvement techniques and engineered earthworks for transportation, building and energy projects, risk management, forensic engineering, dispute resolution and development of technical training programs.

Jerry has been an adjunct faculty member at several prominent universities and been a Keynote speaker at numerous national and international events. He is ARA’s project manager and internal technical expert for two Federal Highway Administration innovation deployment programs related to the topics of Risk Management and Design-Build project delivery. Jerry also serves on the Technical Advisory Panel (TAP) for Seismic, Structures, Tunnels and Buildings and on the Geotechnical Engineering Work Group for the $64B California High Speed Rail Program.

Mr. DiMaggio has authored numerous papers and edited three civil engineering books. He has received career awards from ASCE (Kapp award, and Opal award in 2016), PDCA, ADSC and TRB. In 2015, he presented the Stanley Wilson Lecture in Seattle, Washington, and the first ever Michael O’Neill Lecture in San Antonio, Texas.
